I moved to Mitchell, SD from Northern Wisconsin in 2017 with my wife, Mary (McCardle), and our daughters, Ava and Anna. I have been completely impressed with the warm welcome we’ve received.
Certainly, our transition has been simplified by Mary’s deep ties to Mitchell. Her father, Dr. Robert McCardle, moved to Mitchell in 1949 when he was hired as the Athletic Director and Head Basketball and Football Coach at Dakota Wesleyan. His basketball coaching success and passion earned him a spot in the DWU Athletic Hall of Fame. Later, he served a long tenure as the Superintendent of the Mitchell School District in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, where he was instrumental in establishing and developing the Mitchell Technical Institute. He then joined the private sector as an executive of Mitchell-based Randall’s Grocery Stores, overseeing the operations of Randall’s 50+ grocery stores throughout the Midwest. His larger-than-life personality and strong work ethic are still topics of conversation in Mitchell nearly three decades after his passing.
Another important aspect of our move to Mitchell has been our daughter's experience in school and their extra-curricular activities. We have been blown away by the high quality of teaching, the passion for our kids’ well-being, and the desire for achievement exhibited at each level of schooling we’ve encountered. In addition, our daughters have been able to join top-notch athletic programs (gymnastics, soccer, volleyball, etc.) and renowned music programs (the Mitchell Area Children’s Choir, which sang the national anthem at a Minnesota Twins baseball game last summer) that surpass the quality of programs typically only available in much larger cities.
As for me, personally, I am completely satisfied as long as I have access to a golf course and a driving range. Mitchell excels in this area as well. Its two quality golf courses (Wild Oak and Lakeview) provide tremendous value by offering challenging yet playable layouts with great greens, both at affordable prices. (The only problem is that I’ve lost more than my share of matches there are some pretty good players here!)
So, if you already live here, I’m sure you agree that Mitchell is a great place to live. I hope to meet you shortly if I haven’t already. Alternatively, if you’re looking to relocate your family or your business to Mitchell, I’m confident you’ll be happy with your decision.
